Othello Quotes
Cards in this deck (15)
- 1"It's the green-eyed monster, which doth mock, the meat it feeds on"- METAPHOR
- Green is symbolic of envy and jealousy, jealousy being the heart of the tragedy
- Iago’s anthropomorphizing of jealousy as a “green-eyed monster” is famous, and his use of the colour green stems from a Renaissance belief that green was a “bilious hue,” linked to an imbalance of the humours that caused fear and jealousy. - 2"I nothing but....please his fantasy"
-Iago - 3"I am glad.... (Handkerchief scene)I have found this napkin"
- 4"But I will wear my heart upon my sleeve for daws to peck at. I am not what I am" Iago, quotation analysis- Iago utters these words to Roderigo, signalling that he is not all that he is or appears to be.
- This has more of a subversive message the phrase "I am not what I am" serves a PARODIC ALLUSION to a well known biblical quote from Exodus 3:14, in which Moses askes God his name and God offers an enigmatic response "I am that I am".
-By Iago transforming God's words into a negative formulation, Iago indicates his identity as a diabolical figure. - 5"Villain, be sure thou prove my love a whore....Be sure of it. Give me the ocular proof"
- 6Othello and Desdemona's marriage challenging social order- Othello is also a domestic tragedy: the tragedy of marriage. Othello and Desdemona have a passionate love which could be seen as a threat to the rules established by patriarchal order: their intense, emotionally charged and equal marriage challenges ideas about class, race and the conformity of women. The play suggests that ultimately, if the social order is to continue, this marriage and what it represents must be destroyed.
- 7Othello's fatal flawJEALOUSY
- Which Iago completely exploits
- His flaw connects Othello with audiences who also might have felt the stab of the green eyed monster. Othello's fate is perhaps more likely to inspire pity and fear because of that connection. - 8"An old black ram is tupping your white ewe"- Iago uses crude, animalistic imagery to infuriate Brabantio, and contrasts the races and ages of the two lovers to highlight Desdemona's purity and innocence, compared to Othello, who seems like a lascivious old man. The verb tupping almost seems violent, and so is perhaps used to give the audience a prejudiced view of Othello before they have even seen him on stage.
- 9"But that I love the gentle Desdemona"- Othello's soft language contrasts with his image painted by the other characters. He juxtaposes love with war to highlight the two different parts of his life: battle and his wife. As he describes Desdemona as 'gentle' this could be Shakespeare presenting Othello as aware of their many differences.
- 10The Handkerchief- Since the handkerchief was the first gift Desdemona received from Othello, she keeps it about her constantly as a symbol of Othello’s love. Iago manipulates the handkerchief so that Othello comes to see it as a symbol of Desdemona herself—her faith and chastity.
- 11Critic - Bonnie Greer"It is only Othello's jealousy, not Iago's hatred, that is the real tragedy"
- 12“Oh, I have lost my...reputation I have lost the immortal part of myself and what remains is bestial”
- 13Critic - Andy Serkin's"He is not the devil. He's you or me being jealous and not being able to control our feelings"
- 14"Damn it....shut your mouth"
- 15"No one, I did it myself"symbolises Desdemona is naive
