Communication The process of using messages to generate meaning
Message The content of the communication interaction. The verbal or nonverbal form of the idea, thought, or feeling that one person (source) wishes to communicate to another person or group of people (receivers)
Source A message initiator
Receiver A message target
Feedback The receiver's verbal and nonverbal response to the source's message
Code Verbal or nonverbal cues. A systematic arrangement of symbols used to create meanings in the mind of another person or persons
Encoding The process of translating an idea or thought into a code
Decoding The process of assigning meaning to the idea or thought in a code
Noise Breakdowns or interference. Any interference in the encoding and decoding process that reduces the message clarity
Channel The means by which a message moves from the source to the receiver of the message (sound waves, light waves, touch, etc.)
Context A situation or set of circumstances
Physiological Context Appearance, body shape, health
Psychological Context Attitudes, beliefs, emotions, ethics, expectations, experiences, formalities, memories, morals, noise, purposes, relationships
Cultural Context Behaviors, beliefs, communications, expectations, lifestyles, values

Source Credibility The audience's perception of your effectiveness of a speaker
