Flashcards
Open Channel Flows
Cards in this deck (11)
- 1Define an Open Channel FlowFlow of a fluid with a free surface driven along a conduit by gravity.
- 2Give Practical Applications of Open Channel FlowsFlood Control Structures; dams & hydraulic structures; water depth control; transport infrastructure. May include measure of drainage, river flow, overflow, channel bed stability, water depth, flow speed, force on man-made structures
- 3Define a steady flowflow not evolving in time, e.g. flow downstream of a constant source.
- 4define an unsteady flowvariation of flow in time
- 5define a uniform flowflow not evolving in space, e.g. flow in a channel of uniform cross-section and slope, sufficiently far from the source.
- 6define a steady uniform flowflow not evolving in space or time; bulk forces on flow are in equilibrium, i.e. gravitational driving force = drag, e.g. constant discharge in a channel of uniform cross-section and slope.
- 7Define a steady rapidly varied non-uniform flowflow evolving suddenly in space, where the dynamic force balance on the flow undergoes a transition - usually downstream of a hydraulic structure, e.g. immediately downstream of a sudden change in depth, width or cross-section of a channel.
- 8define an unsteady-non-uniform flowflow evolves in both time and space, owing to a change in source discharge and possibly channel cross-section with distance downstream, e.g. dam break
- 9define a steady slowly varying non-uniform flowflow is constant in time but gently/gradually varying in space - pressure usually modelled as hydrostatic, steamlines are straight
- gradual adjustment in distance towards steady flow - 10Give the basic assumptions made in steady uniform flow in an open channel- Pressure modelled as hydrostatic such that the piezometric head is equal to the free surface
- Reynolds number is assumed to be constant (no variation in water depth and discharge/velocity) - mostly turbulent
- Froude number is constant as well and can be critical, super- or sub-critical.
- Bed slope is assumed to be constant (no variation in water depth and discharge/velocity) - 11—
