Algebra 1- Unit 11: Polynomials

Justin Smith Algebra 1 8th grade English 28 cards

Cards in this deck (28)

  1. 1Absolute ValueueThe distance between a number and zero on a number line. Ex. |3|= 3, |-4|= 4
  2. 2Absolute Value ExpressionAn algebraic or numerical expression that includes absolute value.
  3. 3BinomialA polynomial with two terms.
  4. 4Combine Like TermsThe consolidation of terms whose variables and exponents are the same.
    Ex. 3x–6x+18 = -3x+18
  5. 5ConjugateWhen you change the sign in the middle of two terms. Ex. 3x+1 to 3x–1
  6. 6Cube RootThe length of one side when given the volume of a cube.
    3•3•3=27, √27=3
  7. 7DegreeThe largest exponent the variable has in a polynomial with one variable
    Ex. 4x^3+2x^2+x-7 has a degree of 3
  8. 8DistributeTo multiply out the parts of an expression; the opposite of factoring.
  9. 9The Distributive PropertyProperty which states that multiplying a number by a group of numbers added together is the same as doing each multiplication separately.
    Ex. a(b+c) = ab + ac
  10. 10Equivalent ExpressionTwo expressions that are equal in value.
    Ex. 3x+9y = 3(x+3y)
  11. 11EvaluateTo solve, figure out, or compute.
  12. 12ExpandTo mathematically remove the
parenthesis ( ) in an expression.
    Ex. 3(a+b) = 3a + 3b
  13. 13FactorNumbers we can multiply together to get another number.
Ex. 2 and 3 are factors of 6,
    because 2 • 3 = 6
  14. 14Greatest Common FactorThe highest number that divides exactly into two or more numbers.
  15. 15IndexAnother name for an exponent or power. Tells how many times to use the number in a multiplication problem.
  16. 16MonomialAn expression with a single term.
    Ex. 4x
  17. 17Non-Standard OperationA new "operation" that has been defined.
  18. 18PolynomialAn expression that has constants, variables, and exponents that can be combined using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
    Ex. 3x^2 + 15y – 12
  19. 19RadicalAn expression that has a square root, cube root, etc.
    The symbol is √
  20. 20RadicandThe value inside the radical symbol.
  21. 21Radical ExpressionAn expression involving a radical.
  22. 22Rational ExpressionAn expression that is the ratio of two polynomials.
    Ex. x+2/x–5
  23. 23RationalizeThe process by which a fraction is rewritten so that the denominator contains only rational numbers
  24. 24Simplest Radical FormThe process of simplifying a radical so that there are no more square roots, cube roots, 4th roots, etc. left to find.
  25. 25Square RootA value that, when multiplied by itself, gives the number.
    Ex.- 4^2=4•4=16 so √16=4
  26. 26SubstitutionReplacing variables with numbers.
  27. 27TrinomialA polynomial with three terms.
    Ex. 3x^2 + 15y – 12
  28. 28—
