Algebra 1- Unit 5: Linear Equations
Cards in this deck (13)
- 1Cartesian PlaneThe plane formed by a horizontal axis and a vertical axis, often labeled the x-axis and y-axis, respectively.
- 2Coordinate PlaneWhen the x-axis (horizontal) and y-axis (vertical) intersect, it forms a coordinate plane.
- 3Linear EquationAn equation that can be written in the form "linear polynomial = linear polynomial" or "linear Polynomial = Constant".
Ex. 2x – 3 = 5,
4a + 9 = 8 – 9a,
2x + 5y = 1 - 4OriginThe point that the x-axis and y-axis intersect on coordinate plane. Located at the coordinate (0,0)
- 5Parallel LinesTwo distinct coplanar lines that do not intersect.
- 6Perpendicular LinesLines that intersect at a 90º angle.
- 7Point-Slope Formy – y1 = m(x – x1), where m is the slope and (x1,y1) is a point on the line.
- 8Rate of ChangeHow one variable changes as a function of another variable; means the same as slope.
- 9SlopeOften defined as the steepness of a straight line. It is the ratio of the change in y to the change in x or rise to run.
- 10Slope-Intercept FormA formula for a linear graph, where m = slope and b = y-intercept.
Written as y = mx + b - 11Standard FormA form for writing the equation of a line:
ax + by = c - 12x-interceptA point which a graph intersects the x-axis; must be represented by real numbers, unlike roots and zeros.
- 13y-interceptA point which a graph intersects the y-axis.
