Notes on Buddy D (David) 14 years old/ small and thin for his age/ he attends school/ well- loved and admired by Anna and friends/ plays handmade guitar/ wants to be rich and drive a flashy car/ hates Dadda/ becomes involved in crime.
Notes on Oupa/ Ashraf/ Buddy O Slightly older than buddy D and J/ has malformed legs which makes him look like an elderly person when he walks/ sings beautifully/ plays drums on upturned pots+ pans/ wants to be famous one day.
Notes on Buddy J (Johan) Taller and fatter than David/ younger than David/ he loves television/ plays the mouth organ/ wants to be a pilot.
Which act of Kindness does David show to which buddy? Shows kindness to the eldest buddy (Buddy O/ Oupa) by always providing him with a walking stick because Oupa has malformed legs, hence his nickname.
What do David's "parents" do for a living? Dadda- Gardener, does odd jobs (washing cars), grows seedlings at home which he sells. Mamsie- Domestic worker who has worked for the same family for many years.
Where does the Mamdam live and what does she give Mamsie Lives in Hout Bay and gives Mamsie any unwanted items (e.g. old clothes, leftover food, ornaments or crockery.)
What does Dadda not allow Mamsie to take to her Madam in thanks. His flowers
What are the negative aspects of Mamsie's job? Low wages/ has to travel far/ leaves home very early and returns late at night/ long working hours/ sometimes has to stay over when riots occur/ away from her own children for long periods of time.
What are the negative aspects of Dadda's job? Sometimes paid with wine (he drinks too much)/ income uncertain/ at home during the day at times/ dissatisfied and drinks which gets him into fights with the neighbours.
What does Dadda do with his plants at home bvefore seliing them? He cultivates them.
Why is Dadda so strict with David? David is not his child/ he says that Dadda smokes and steals/ actually very concerned about David/ wants D to be successful and have a better life.
Why does David not respect Dadda? Dadda drinks and is abusive when he is drunk/ impatient with David/ often hits D/ D misses his 'own' dad.
Why does Anna think that the parents speak English to the children even though they are Afrikaans? The parents feel that the children have a better chance in life if they speak English.
Where does Dadda come from and why did he move towns? Comes from a town called Elim, near Swellendam. There was not enough work for everyone.
What is Anna's realistaion about life? You have big decisions to make in life. Life is about making the right choices and you have to decide on the person that you want to be or the one you do not want to be.
