- 1What is the difference between Diatonic and Chromatic, and how they are used ?Diatonic refers to any type of note structure that derives from a normal seven note scale.
Chromatic on the other hand refers to things that are not within the scale.
Examples: Diatonic scale, diatonic chord, diatonic notes or melody... - 2What interval quality meas?Used to refers as to what makes a chord major/minor/augmented/diminished.
- 3What are the symbols for intervals quality?Augmented (designated as A or +) Ex 8+
Major (Ma) Ex: Ma3
Perfect (P) P5,P8
Minor (mi) Ex: mi3 or min3
Diminished (d or °) Ex: mi4° - 4How are chords described?First we take the root note letter(do sustenido=c); Ex:C
Secondly we put the QUALITY of the note;
EX:Major triad: no quality symbol used.
Minor triad: lowercase “mi”
Diminished triad: superscript circle (o)
Augmented triad: plus sign (+)
So C = cmajor, cminor with diminished 6th = C° - 5What is diminished and what is augmented chords?Augmented means 1 step up. Appears only in conjunction with a major triad followed by a augmented third. So C E G#
Diminished is the oppositte. Its always minor thirds with a diminished fifth or on step below; So C Eb Gb - 6How to spell a seventh chord?Seventh chords are named depending the quality of the first + the second triad.
So...
MAJOR SEVENTH CHORD -> major-major seventh chord = major triad + major seventh. Ex: C E G -> E G B = Cma7
DOMINANT SEVENTH CHORD-> major-minor seventh chord = major triad + minor seventh Ex: C E G -> E G Bb uses C7
MINOR SEVENTH CHORD-> minor-minor seventh chord = minor triad + minor seventh Uses Cmin7
NO NAME -> Diminished triad +minor seventh chord
Ex: C Eb Gb -> Eb Gb Bb Uses C /°
DIMINISHED SEVENTH CHORD->Diminished triad + diminished seventh chord
Ex: C Eb Gb -> Eb Gb Bbb or A Uses C°
If the chord is not in root position and has a different tone as the bass note, you can add a /tone to the chord; Ex: Cmin7/G - 7How to spell using Roman Numerals?A Roman numeral = chord
If chord major = Numeral UPPERCASE IV
if minor = Numeral normal iv
Add + or ° for other qualityes iv°
Add number for bigger chords
iv7 (so its the fourth note of the scale and the chord is a minor seventh Ex F Ab C Eb or Fmi7)
To know if a V7 is a dominant it kinda depends on the context :v - 8What is Monophony?A musical texture with a single, unaccompanied melodic line.
- 9What is Heterophony?A musical texture with multiple simultaneous variants on a single melodic line.
- 10What is Homophony?A musical texture consisting of one melodic part (usually the topmost) and other subordinate accompanying parts. This includes chorale texture and melody-and-accompaniment texture.
- 11What is polyphony?A musical texture with multiple independent melodic voices, distinguished from one another through different rhythms and/or intervallic profiles. Also known as counterpoint. Polyphony may occur in many styles but is commonly associated with contrapuntal genres like fugues and canons.
