| what is a smart material? | a material that reacts to changes in the environment. they can respond to: heat, light and moisture. |
| what is a shape memory alloy? (NITINOL) | a shape memory alloy remembers its original shape and when deformed returns to the original shape if heated. they are an alloy of nickle and titanium. |
| what are shape memory alloys used for? | braces - human body heat causes he wire to expand while clamped the teeth causing them to move into the correct place. glasses frames - if glasses are bent out of shape (e.g. if they are sat on) they can be heated to go back to the original shape. they also remain the chosen shape at room temperature. anti-scalding valves - valves fitted to water pipes and will auto shut off the water if it becomes too hot. |
| what characteristic makes nitinol suitable for braces? | nitinol is in inert material and therefore will not react inside the users mouth - which if it was not inert could be dangerously toxic. |
| what are thermchromic inks and what are they used for? | inks that react to temperature change by changing color. uses - baby feeders that change color if the food is to hot. can be incorporated in textiles to show if a patient is too hot or a baby |
| why do some batteries use thermochromic ink? | the ink changes in response to the current to show whether the battery needs replacing or recharging. |
| what are the advantages and disadvantages of using thermchromic film in thermometers? | advantages - very accurate, changes color over time with a temperature range. disadvantages - difficult to read and dangerous if broken. |
| what is smart grease and what is it used for? | is used to control the rate of slide caused by the grease. viscous material used when controlled release of energy is required uses - glove compartments - steering mechanisms - washing machines (Reduces noise and vibrations) found in flip or slide phones. |
| what is smart fluid and what is it used for? | has a rheological effect on the components. if the fluid is stirred or shaken it changes into a solid shape - when the rapid movement is reduced it turns back into a liquid. very useful where dampening is required e.g. shock absorber on car suspension. |
| what are quantum tunneling composites and what are they used for? | a polymer containing small metal particles - normally an insulator but when compressed becomes a conductor or electricity. uses - used as sensitive switches to control electrical devices in clothing e.g. light up clothing. |
| what are the advantages of using QTC in clothing? | no large mechanical mechanisms are needed. |
| what are the 3 main types of smart glass? | liquid crystal glass - laminated material - LCD sandwiched between 2 layers of glass used for interior partitions. electro-chromic smart glass - a layer of electrochromic film that goes from dark to clear when voltage is added. SPD - Suspended Particle devise - a conductive film suspended between two layers of glass. when no voltage the glass absorbs light remaining dark, when voltage is applied the glass allows the light through - light can be varied by varying voltage. |
| what is electronic smart glass and what is it used for? | electronic smart glass changes form transparent to dark when a voltage is applied. the glass can help control heat and light. can change at the flick of a switch. uses - building windows and rear view windows in cars. |
