Popular Sovereignty Authority of a state and it's government is created and sustained by the consent of it's people.
Naturalization The legal process in which a non-citizen can acquire citizenship.
Dual Citizenship When a person is a citizen in 2 countries at the same time.
Immigrants A person who comes from a country to permanently live in a different country.
Refugees A person who is forced to leave their country in order to escape war or natural disaster.
"Melting Pot" Theory Metaphor for a heterogeneous society becoming more homogeneous.
"Salad Bowl" Theory Immigrants keep many parts of their culture.
14th Amendment Addresses citizenship rights and equal protection of the laws. Granted citizenship to all those born or naturalized in the US.
Government The governing body of a nation, a state, or a community.
Autocracy Governed by one person who holds absolute power.
Oligarchy A small group of people having control over a country.
Democracy Eligible members of a country hold some power over how the government rules.
Direct Democracy Each qualifying citizen gets to participate in government decisions.
Representative Democracy (Indirect) Officials are elected to represent the general public.
