Question Answer
Mountain Uses- Hydro-electric power The Yuncan Dam Location: Pasco, Peru 350km NE of Lima
Key Facts - Deep valleys in Andes are perfect for HEP - Snow melt fuels most of the water for the dam. -50% of Peru's energy comes from HEP
Positives -Reliable renewable energy = less env't damage - Less effective in winter (less snowmelt) - Water can be reused for irrigation
Negatives -Very expensive(Yuncan Dam $262 million) -Flooded villages = communities destroyed -Silt fills dam over time = less energy made
The Future Reduction in water (due to glacial retreat because of global warming) will reduce production of HEP. This will make energy supply inconsistent for the people relying on HEP.
