Question Answer
A + B <--> C + D reversible reaction
------------> <------- Reaction is product favored
----> <------------- Reaction is reactant favored
A + B --> C + D Forward reaction
C + D ---> A + B Reverse reaction
Keq aA + bB <--> cC + dD Keq = [D]^d [C]^c / [A]^a [B]^b
Keq >> 1 reaction is product favored
Keq << 1 Reaction reactant favored
Keq about equal to 1 no direction is favored
Reaction multiplied by a factor, K is... raised to the same factor
Reaction is reversed K(reverse) = 1/K(forward) = 1/Keq
When adding reactions together, their Keqs are... Multiplied together
When writing equilibrium expressions, do NOT include... solids and pure liquids because they are considered condensed phases, therefore their concentration does not change
Conversion of Kc to Kp Kc = Kp (1/RT) ^change in moles of gas
Kp and Kc have units of... No units because each concentration and pressure is divided by their standard unit/state
Mixed equilibrium constants have.... units!
R. I. C. E Reaction. Initial (concentration/pressure). Change. Equilibrium
If Q = K, reaction is.... at equilibrium
If Q < K.... reactants are favored; reaction proceeds in the reverse direction
If Q > K.... products are favored; the reaction proceeds in the forward direction
Le Châtelier's Principle when stress is applied on a system, the system will offset that stress in a specific fashion
If more of a reactant is added to a reaction.... the reaction will shift in the forward direction
If more of a product is added to a reaction.... The reaction will shift in the reverse direction...
Solids and pure liquids added will... produce no change
Catalysts added to a reaction will.... produce no change
If some of a reactant is removed from the reaction... the reaction will shift in the reverse direction
If some of a product is removed from the reaction... the reaction will shift in the forward direction
If the container the reaction takes place in expands, the reaction will.... shift in the direction with the larger number of gas particles
If the container the reaction takes place in compresses, the reaction will... shift in the direction with the smaller number of gas particles
If heat is added to the reaction the reaction will shift away from the heat (ie heat added to an endothermic reaction will drive it right; heat added to an exothermic reaction will drive it left)
If a reaction is cooled the reaction will shift toward the heat (ie heat removed from an endothermic reaction will drive it left; heat removed from an exothermic reaction will drive it right)
