The social reproduction of labour power (family provides a place where children can be raised with decurity and the ruling class has passive labour) the family provides a stable place for the work force to rest. domestic labour is unpaid and so benefits capitilists. parents have control over children and men over women which teaches conformity.
Social control of the working class (keeping people conforming) Parents must work hard to be 'good' parents to provide material support. Parents are less likely to strike incase it damages money for their family. The family allows anger release so the parents still work sufficiently.

Critisms Many families are now symmetrical. Many women chose to become full time parents as they find it fullfilling. 70% of divorces are by women (they can survive). Children have more status in the family now.
