Question Answer
Homosynaptic facilitation increase in response in one post-synapse due to stimulation of one pre-synpase
Heterosynaptic facilitation enhanced response in a post-synapse due to interaction between a few pre-synapses
Windup/ homosynaptic potentiation a progressively increasing output during the course of a train of identical stimuli (technically called homosynaptic potentiation)
Pain matrix a network of cortical areas through which pain is generated from nociception
Myofascial trigger point also known as trigger sites or muscle knots, are described as hyperirritable spots in skeletal muscle
Event-related magnetic field (ERP) Magnetic field recorded from EEG in response to a stimulus
The salience of a given stimulus is defined as its ability to stand out relative to neighboring stimuli
peripersonal space a representation of the body and environment within grasp
Hyperalgesia An increased response to a stimulus which is normally painful.
Define pain An unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage.
Noxious stimulus damaging to normal tissues
Nociceptor A receptor that detects and transduces a potentially injurious stimulus and/or a primary sensory neuron that is preferentially sensitive to a noxious stimulus.
Allodynia Pain due to a stimulus which does not normally provoke pain.
Neuropathic Pain Pain initiated or caused by a primary lesion or dysfunction in the nervous system.
Peripheral Neuropathic Pain Pain initiated or caused by a primary lesion or dysfunction in the peripheral nervous system.
central sensitization refers to an increased sensitivity to pain in the central nervous system
perirhipheral sensitization a state of heightened sensitivity in which the threshold of activation of transducer receptors such as TRPV1 is reduced, and the excitability of the peripheral terminal membrane increases.
