Archetype An initial model or idea from which later ideas and models of the same thing are all derived.
Analogy The act of comparing one thing with another that shares similar characteristics, to help a person learn about the first thing.
Allegory A story that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning or to symbolise ideal and concepts.
Transcendent Beyond the material world. Above the range of normal human experience.
Form of Good The highest of all the Forms. Plato said it was also the source of the other Forms.
The Cave A famous analogy written by Plato which he uses to explain some parts of his theory of Forms.
Necessary Being Something which cannot not exist and therefore always exists.
A priori Knowledge prior to or before experience.
A posteriori Knowledge from or after experience.
Absolutism There are objective truths; truths that are universal and unchanging in all circumstances.
Form By 'Form' Plato meant the idea of something. The Form of anything is not physical but is the eternal idea of what a thing is.
Dualism Belief in two distinct principles - often opposites eg, Plato's belief in two realms and the separation of the soul and the body.
Rationalism Knowledge is based on reason. We can gain knowledge and understanding using our reason.
