Base Substances that can react with acids and neutralise them to make a salt and water. Usually metal oxides or hydroxides.
Acids Substance with a pH less than 7.
Alkalis Substances with a pH more than 7. Bases that dissolve in water.
Neutral Solutions Solution with a pH of 7.
Anhydrous Without water.
Hydrated With water.
Exothermic Heat is given out
Endothermic Heat is taken in
Catalyst A substance that speeds up a reaction without getting used up in the reaction or affecting the result.
Activation energy Minimum amount of energy needed by particles to react.
Mole The unit for amount of subtance. The molar mass is the relative formula mass of a substance in grams (g/mol).
Atom The smallest particle of an element that can exist.
Molecule Two or more atoms bonded together. Smallest unit of a chemical compound.
Compound A thing that is composed of two or more separate elements.
Isotope Two or more forms of the same element that contain equal numbers of protons but different numbers of neutrons in their nuclei.
Nanoparticles Really tiny particles that are 1-100 nanometres across.
Nanoscience Using nanoparticles.
