Question Answer
What is an ion? an atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons.
What happens if an electron is removed from an atom? That atom becomes a positively charged ion.
whats another name for a positive ion? Cations.
what are cations? it is formed when an atom loses electrons.
why does the atom form a cation? Due to the emptiness of its outermost shell.
From which type of atoms do cations mostly come from and why? they mostly come from metal atoms because metal atoms have few electrons in their outermost electron shell and these electrons are weakly bound to the atom.
What is an anion? It is produced when an atom gains electrons. This will occur if the outermost electron is almost full.so it gains electrons until the shell is filled.
where do anions come from? All anions come from non-metallic atoms.
What are ionic compounds? It is when cations and anions come together they are made up of large crystal lattices.
how do you name an ionic compound? you write the name of the cation followed by the name of the anion.
What happens when cations come close to anions? they stick together forming an ionic bond.
