Flashcards
Chapter 4: Astronomy, A Physical Perspective

Cards in this deck (6)
- 1Light GatheringDetermined by the diameter of the lense.
We use the formula below to determine how many magnitudes fainter stars a diameter d_2>d_1 can see.
- 2Angular resolution

- 3Focal lengthThe distance from the lens at which a bundle of rays are gathered

- 4Focal ratiof = aperture on a camera.
Each f-stop on a camera changes the brightness by a factor 2. Therefor each f-stop is a factor √2.
- 5Linear seperation, xThe linear distance between two objects that form an angle theta with the lens/film-axis.

- 6Angular magnificationThis is how much the angular size of an object will increase. On binoculars or telescopes it can be 10x or 25x etc.
