What is she the goddess of? (3) the harvest, fertility, the seasons and the Eleusinian mysteries.
What are her family relations? she is the sister and mistress of Zeus. The mother of Persephone
How is she depicted in art? she is shown with grain and fruit and often with a cornecopia. she is sometimes crowned with flowing hair and with torches. She is shown often with Persephone or Triptolemos.
How is Demeter's role in her cults and in society unique? she is the mother of sustenance. She provides food for the body and the soul not just the soul
What happened to her daughter that caused such a problem? without telling demeter, Zeus arranged for Persephone to marry Hades. While Persephone was out playing the fields she saw a flower. When she went to pick it the ground burst open and Hades grabbed her and took her to the underworld.
Why was Hades' named never used in this or almost any story? the Greeks thought if you attracted his attention at the wrong time by saying his name it could mean your death.
No one told Demetre what had happened to her daughter. How did she react when she couldn't find Persephone? In anguish she went out to search for her. For nine days she searched the earth with a torch in each hand not drinking nectar or eating ambrosia.
Who finally tells her of Zeus arrangement? What does Demetre do? Helios tells her about the marriage and Demeter is even more upset then she already was. she withdrew from the gods, disguised herself as an old women and hid among humans.
What does she do while she hides among humans? she goes to the house of Elevis where the women at the well tell her they can find her a job. she ends up become the nursemaid for the King and Queens new baby son Demophoon.
How does Demeter treat the prince? she loves him and starts to feed him ambrosia and nectar to make him immortal. She also buried him the in the fire at night for him immortality.
How do things go wrong? One night the Queen looks out a window and sees Demeter putting her son in the fire and she flips out. she confronts Demeter who gets very angry and reveals herself
What does Demetre tell the royal family? she tells them she would havce made their son immortal. In penance she tells them to build her a temple with an alter and she will bring her mysteries there
After she leaves the Kings house, What does Demeter do? How is she feelings? she now has no baby to distract her from the loss of her own. She is even more depressed and creates a famine for a year
How does Zeus react to the famine? eventually he sends the messanger goddess Iris to get Demeter to release the famine. She refuses unless she can see her daughter again. He agrees and sends Hermes to talk to Hades and bring Persephone back to the surface.
Hades agrees to let her go, but what does he do first? he has Persephone eat a pomegranate seed. Because she ate food from the underworld, she has to return.
What happens when Persephone and Demeter are together again? Demeter lets things grow again. When she finds out her daughter has to go back to the underworld, she negotiates so her daughter is with her two thirds of the year and the other third in the underworld.
How is the time with Persephone significant? it represnts the seasons in Greece. Two thirds of the year things grow, and the other third is the off season
