Question Answer
mission statement healing begins with faith
what the mission statement means to me that not only does the clinic family need to have faith that the patients will overcome their health disparities and obstacles, but we hope to instill faith in the african americans of oakpark who largely feel as though the health care system has neglected their needs
what are the healthcare disparities in the african american community? hypertension, diabetes, asthma, heart disease, cancer, stroke, kidney diseases and inadequate prenatal care
what are some of the struggles that A.As face in the oakpark community? mostly minorities most are healthcare uninsured many have a linguistic barrier/ are undocumented but most of all, most do not trust healthcare professionals!
what are the goals of the clinic? in your own words 1. to provide medical and preventative care services and health education to the medically underserved and uninsured population 2) to educate students on serving the underserved pops of African Americans; and, to increase awareness of health care access in the underserved African-American community; to provide positive role models for African-American community; and to provide opportunities for medical students to develop clinical skills.
clinic history opened in October 1994 by the medical students of SNMA that were mostly concerned with improving the healthcare outcomes of african americans
tell me about a time when you had to make a difficult decision that awful customer I had trying to return the slippers
tell me about a time you did something wrong. how did you handle it? signing errors- customer satisfaction
what do you feel you would contribute to our team positive attitude dedication/commitment someone who can relate to and identify with the aa pop as someone who lacks faith- support
describe yourself in three words responsible thoughtful/ caring dedicated
qualities a leader should have professionalism patience caring
questions: imani bolt run in the next coming months, if chosen can I participate as a runner? what about the Ulezi Family Health Faire- do we all get the chance to participate in the faire?
describe some of our outreach projects Ulezi Family Health Faire (formerly known as the Ulezi Children's Health Faire): hosted in mid-summer every year, this large event provides free health screenings and invaluable health care information to the community of Oak Park IHEOP (Imani Health Education and Outreach Program): Imani undergraduate volunteers are trained by UC Davis Medical Students in order to council and advise patients with chronic illnesses (such as Hypertension and Diabetes) to help them make lifestyle modifications and maintain their chronic illnesses. Black Family Day: hosted on the main UC Davis campus in the spring, Black Family Day celebrates African-American culture, family, and hope.
the history of Oakpark Oakpark is a community in south Sacramento that boasts of a multicultural population that is predominantly african american- many are uninsured and working poor or unemployed or undocumented non english speakers.
some of the services that the clinic offers the community Prescription Refills Health Education Pap Smears Pregnancy Testing HIV/ STD testing Birth Control Prescription Depression Screening and Counseling Substance abuse Screening and Counseling
define disparities population-specific differences in the presence of disease, health outcomes, quality of health care and access to health care services that exist across racial and ethnic groups. Disparities represent a lack of efficiency within the health care system and therefore account for unnecessary costs.
cause of health disparities culturally insensitive health care leads to more disparities- minorities are more likely to receive this type of care and this results in the general distrust we have in the system
culturally- sensitive health care healthcare that responds to the attitudes beliefs and feelings of a particular culture due to religion, socioeconomic status and ethnic identity
why is there a lack of faith in the a a community? african americans and minorities in general are mostly victims of culturally insensitive healthcare - they are less involved in the process of the dr-patient interaction and they also have less trust for this reason
factors contributing to the disparities culturally insensitive unequal access to healthcare ethnicity gender educational level SES
culturally insensitive factors from case study drs spoke more to minorities- dominated conversation, so these patients spoke less, felt they were not respectful, were generally less satisfied- drs overtalk maybe because assumed lack of education but they don't really stop to think about what they can learn from the patients
why I want to volunteer at the clinic Besides obviously wanting to help people like we all do, I chose Imani specifically because of how well I identify with the oakpark community and the aa pop due to a lack of trust in the healthcare system as well- it is what propelled me to pursue medicine. Experiencing drs who actually don't care I know what it's like to feel as though the people who have your life in their hands don't care much about you at all. So I can complain all about it as much as I want but I want to be the change that I hope to see in the healthcare system
possible roles in the clinic: I would like floater because I get to experience different roles, also intake I like listening to people I can take complaints Monitor (supervises all clinic operations, including patient flow)
--Translator (the majority of patients seen at Imani are Spanish speaking only and require translating)
- -intake (responsible for recording patient vitals, current medications, and chief complaints)
--Lab Technician (conducts urine analyses, pregnancy tests, glucose checks; and prepares specimens for further study)
--Reception (checks patients in and creates charts)
--Floater (provides extra help wherever it is needed)
--Outreach in the neighboring Oak Park community
