- 1What are the different types of malwareComputer viruses- carry a malicious pay load and usually piggback on a document or processs to be executed. End up making a duplicate of themselves
Worms- Programs that replicate themselves over a computer network. Not usually attached to a program but maybe a email attachment
Trojan Horses- act as applications but used to often drop a virus. do not spread often but mess up computer
Hoax- Not a virus. usually a message warning you about a non existent threat. usually opening them ends up installing a virus - 2How do EXe and COM viruses work?1) Add themselves to programs already present on victim computer ==> resulting in virus control of computer
2) shared via infected USBs and Floppies - 3How do Boot sector viruses work?Reside on the Boot sector of a floppy or hard disk and infects ones online. Successful viruses put themselves on the Master Boot Record (MBR)
- 4What were the early counter measures to viruses?1) Changing boot device sequence in CMOS
2) Disallowing writing to system areas of HDD's - 5What is the Open with Notepad option for virus checking?Opening with Notepad and look for the first two letters and see if it contains and MZ / PE which means it contains a a executable file!
- 6How does a virus scanner find viruses?1) looks for characteristic pattern of a virus such as string of characters or a binary computer code
- 7What is a problem when looking for characteristic patterns?1) uninfected files may also have the same pattern
2) sometimes a virus may have a different encryption key on a different computer
3) too many host programs to look for in the patterns - 8What is spyware?Software that gathers user information without the users knowledge . usually downloaded as a shareware or freeware
Transmits information and passwords back to main user - 9What are the 2 types of Spy ware and what are their characteristics?1. Surveillance Spyware
* key loggers, screen capture devices, trojans
*used by corps, law enforcement , etc
2. Advertising Spyware
*Software installed along side other software which gain information to show personal ads and uses the users computer resources - 10What is Risk-WareLegitimate programs that if exploited can cause damage
