| What is an ecosystem? | The interaction between the community and non-living components of the environment e.g. water, oxygen, soil |
| What is a species? | A group of closely related individuals which are capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring. |
| What is a population? | All the individuals of a given species living together in the same area at the same time. |
| What is a community? | A community is all the individuals of different species living together in the same area at the same time. |
| What is a habitat? | A place where an organism lives within an ecosystem. |
| What is a niche? | Several organisms may be found in the same habitat but will occupy a different nice. A niche describes where an organism lives and what it does. Includes what it feeds on and how it interacts with other organisms and the environment. |
| What would happen if two species try to occupy the same niche? | They will compete with each other but only one species will be more successful than the other and the other will die out. |
| The niche a species occupies within its habitat includes: | It's biotic interactions e.g. the organisms it eats, and those it's eaten by. Abiotic interactions e.g. the oxygen an organism breathes, soil, water pH, slope of the land. |
| Example of different niches | Two species of Cormorant nest on ledges on sea cliffs (same habitat) but one feeds on food found in the sand and the other species feed on fish taken from the sea. Therefore, the two species occupy different niches. Feed at different times of the day therefore occupy different niches. |
