How is the beginning of the last chapter mirroring? at the start of the book he was in a pub with his drooges deciding how to spend the night. At the end, years later, he is in a similar place with different drooges, in the same situation but he makes a different choice
How is Alex's relationship with Dim mirroring? in the beginning he was always beating up Dim or putting him down. In book 3 Dim becomes a police officer who beats up Alex and puts him down
How is Alex's Relationship with F. Alexander mirroring? He tried to kill Alexander for fun in book one, and Alexander tries to kill him for political reasons in book 3
How is betrayal common in the book? first Alex is betrayed by his drooges in book 1, then by his cell mates in part 2, and then by F. Alexander and his friends in part 3.
How has Alex's role in the world changed? there is a great emphasis on Alex's suffering in book 3. He has gone from being the perpetrator and the punish-er in book one to being the helpless victim in book 3
How has society changed while Alex was in jail? What shows us this? The government now has more control. They control the media which we see when Alex sees the government published newspaper that just tells everyone to vote for them again. The police are cracking down on crime as their are less criminals on the streets and the newspaper brags about it. Things are more organized and civilized as the flat block is cleaned and orderly.
Why is Alex's picture in the paper? Why is it important? the governmne is showing him as a success pf the Ludivico treatment. It shows the idea that there are two ways to deal with crime. in line with more and better police officers, crome can either be cured like with ALex or it can be brought on the side of the state by putting the violent youth in power as police officers
The newspaper calls him a law fearing citizen. Why is this an important description? in a free society they would have said he was a law abiding citizen. This shows law has to be feared in this society
desccribe Pelagian Vs. Augustinian. What does this have to do with government? Pelagius was a british monk who believed that people had within them the source of their own salvation. St. Augustinian believed as amny did in the doctrine of original sin meaning that all people are born sinful and can only be saved by God. All men are born bad and cannot be trusted to make good choiced. Pelagian inspires liberal thinking in government while Augustinian inspired conservative thinking in government
describe how the government has changed in the clockwork orange. at first it is liberal but people have started to make bad choices and the society has become unsafe. people risk their liberty for safety by voting in a conservative government.
how does society behaviour effect the kind of government people choose? when we behave well we adopt a liberal style of government but when selfishness and disorder become too much we adopt a conservative government
How is it ironic that F. Alexander is fighting for the Liberal humanist side? this style of thinking is what killed his wife
How is the way the party treats Alex ironic? they are fighting for human choice and freedom and yet they want to manipulate and use Alex in a way that will kill him for their own benefit
in chapter 7, while out with his new drooges, how does Alex change his future and his life? he starts by deciding not to go ou with his friends that night to commit crimes. He just doesn't feel like it anymore.
What changes do we see in Alex in the last chapter? he has become less violent and no longer wants to be involved in violent crimes. His taste in music has changed also as he likes simple piano and singing instead of violent orchestra. In general his personality is changing as he ages
describe the only moment in the novel where Alex feels embarrased in this chapter? he had picture of a baby in his pocket which fell out and his drooges saw it.
Who does he see on his way home? how does this influence him? he sees his old friend Pete who is at a cafe with his wife Georgia. He is very surprised and influenced by the change in his friend and starts to see the changes in himself
what has Alex decided that he wants? he wants to have a wife like Pete dose and he wants to have a child.
How does he describe youth violence and law breaking? says being young is like being a wild animl. its like being a windup toy that only walks straight and then bangs into things. it cannot be stops. he wants to tell his son that he doesnt really want to be bad but he wont listen to him. he wont be able to stop him and the cycle will continue. he changed not by learning but by growing up. change comes with age
how does the last chapter change Alex's character dynamic? without this chapter he is a stagnant character as he doesn't change at all until this chapter.
why is the 21 chapters of the book important? it a symbol for 21, the age of maturity.
why is the American version of this novel a fable and not a novel? in fables you learn a lesson. the characters in them stand for a symbol or idea and remain unchanged. in a novel the characters change and grow, humans rather then symbols
how does the addition of the 21st chapter change our ideas about Alex? in the 20th chapter, Alex is still a bad person, the picture of evil. with the 21st chapter, though he doesn't feel remorse for all the bad things he did, he still has the capacity to change and get better
why might the 21st chapter be a problem? could be interpreted that people can change on their own so society should pull back on discipline, hoping they will make good choices on their own. this could increase crime and create more problems
what ideas does the 20 chapter edition support? what about the 21st chapter? 21 chapters supports the ideas of socialism and human good from Justinian. 20 chapters supports conservatism and the ideas of Augustinian
