Question Answer
Simple random sampling Arrange a list of all members of the population. Assign each member of the population a different number. Using random number generator , randomly select members from the population until the sample size is met.
Advantage of simple random sampling 1.It is easy to analyse the data. 2. The sample is bias free.
Disadvantage of simple random sampling Not able to get access to some members who have been chosen for the sample.
Systematic Sampling Arrange the members of the population in some order, i.e. in alphabetical order. Then calculate the sampling interval, k =Population size/Sample size. Then select a number randomly from the first K members. From the first selected members, select every kth member of the population,
Advantage of systematic sampling 1.The sample is more evenly spread out. 2.Easier to conduct as compared to stratified sampling.
Disadvantage of systematic sampling Could be biased when the members of the population have a periodic or cyclic pattern.
Stratified Sampling Divide the population into mutually exclusive strata such as gender, age group, ethnic groups. Then randomly draw samples from each stratum. The sample size has to be proportional to the relative size of the stratum.
Advantage of stratified sampling 1.The sample is representative of the population. 2.As each stratum can be handled separately, it is more convenient and accurate.
Disadvantage of stratified sampling It is time consuming.
Quota sampling Divide the population into distinct and non-overlapping strata which together covers the population. Then decide on a quota for each stratum. After which, the person taking the sample selects the members from each stratum until the quota is met.
Advantage of quota sampling 1.lower cost 2.Information can be collected quickly
Disadvantage of quota sampling 1. Not a good representative of the population. 2. Biased as the interviewer may select those who are easiest to interview or those who look cooperative.
