Unit 1.1 Solar heating of the Earth

Resource summary

Question Answer
What does the energy from the sun heat on Earth? Energy from the sun heats the atmosphere, land and water at the surface.
How is helium nuclei produced on the Sun? The Sun is powered by nuclear fusion. Hydrogen nuclei combine at extreme temperatures and pressures to produce helium nuclei and large amounts of energy.
What is the total amount of energy released by the sun compared to the total amount of energy used by the humans on Earth? The total amount of energy released by the sun is almost 378 billion, billion, billion watts over its surface. In comparison, the total energy used by human activities is about 15 thousand billion.
The solar energy reaching the top layers of Earth's atmosphere is about 1400 W/m². What's the percentage of that energy that makes it down to the Earth? Of that energy, only about 40% makes it down to the Earth- the rest is either reflected back into space or absorbed by the atmosphere.
What is the electromagnetic spectrum and what is the solar energy that enters the Earth's atmosphere? The electromagnetic spectrum is a range of different forms of light and other energy-carrying waves. The solar energy that enters the earth's atmosphere is electromagnetic radiation which has a wide range and different wavelengths.
Why does the sky look blue to us? This is because molecules in the air tend to absorb blue light and then emit it again in a different direction. The molecules then scatter the blue light in all directions, allowing us to see it.
What are greenhouse gases and what do they do? Greenhouse gases are gases in the atmosphere including water vapour, methane and carbon dioxide that absorb electromagnetic radiation.
Why is it important for life on Earth that the Earth's energy is kept in balance? It is important because if less energy was lost than gained, then the earth would slowly heat up and if more energy was lost, then the Earth would cool down.
Where does most of the energy on earth go? Most of the energy is eventually radiated back out into space and it is lost from the Earth.
How is climate stability strongly related to the natural greenhouse effect? This is because the greenhouse gases absorb electromagnetic radiation in the atmosphere, which leads to the warming of the Earth.
What is another way incoming solar radiation reacts with the atmosphere? Incoming solar radiation also in other ways with the atmosphere and the substances in it.That includes clouds that reflect light and some dust that reflect light or absorbs it.
What did scientists think about air pollution and smog over cities? Scientists think that they could be counterbalancing the greenhouse effect by reflecting back energy into space.
How can volcanoes influence climate ? Volcanoes can influence climate in several ways such as releasing CO2 which contributes to warming or ash clouds that block the sunlight causing cooling.
Why is it necessary to wear sunglasses when snow skiing? It is necessary to wear sunglasses when snow skiing because the snow reflects so much solar energy.
What leads to the different amount of heating around the Earth. The different rates at which various surfaces absorb heat energy from the sun leads to different amounts of heating around the Earth.
How is wind created from hot air and cold air? Hot air is less dense than cool air and tends to rise, creating an area of low atmospheric pressure. Cooler air from regions where the surface is cooler rushes towards the low-pressure area, creating wind.
How are the different areas of the ocean heated by the incoming solar radiation? Different areas of the ocean are heated by incoming solar radiation to different temperatures. Warmer water rises, cooler water sinks, and there are massive currents that carry large amount of energy from one area of the world to the another.
What is the ozone layer and what does it do? The Ozone layer is a thin layer high in the atmosphere. It absorbs a large amount of harmful ultraviolet radiation, leading to the heating of the atmosphere.
What will happen if there was NO Ozone layer? If there was no Ozone layer, then the harmful ultraviolet light will eventually reach the Earth's surface, increasing sunburn and rates of skin cancer.
What are some forms of harmful electromagnetic radiation and do they reach the Earth's surface? Gamma rays and X-rays are other high-energy forms of electromagnetic radiation that could damage cells in living organisms.Fortunately, Nitrogen and Oxygen molecules in the air absorb them.
