- 1Betrayal - The betrayal of a loyal friend by a wealthier, more corrupt. Amir and Hassan’s feelings of guilt drive much of the novel’s actions. Central betrayal is when Amir watches and does nothing as Hassan, who always stood up for him, gets raped by Assef. Amir worsens his guilt by driving Ali and Hassan from the household. Later on, Amir also learns that Baba also betrayed his own best friend and servant - by fathering a child with Ali’s wife Sanuabar - betrayal to Amir. These low points, the betrayals of Amir and Baba also lead to quests for redemption - Baba leads a principled, charitable life, and Amir rescues Sohrab."Hassan knew.
