Question Answer
what is an earthquake? the rapid movement of the ground usually back and forth, up and down in a wave motion due to the movement of the tectonic plates
what is a epicentre? the point on the earths surface directly above the focus of an earthquake
what is focus? the place blow the ground where an earthquake starts
what are hotspots? isolated places away from plate boundaries where a lot of hot magma is being created
what is lava? molten rock below the earths surface
what are primary waves? (P-waves) a longitudinal seismic wave that travels fast trough the earth
what is pyroclastic flow? a cloud of ash, rock and gas at about 500'C that exits the volcano like an avalanche
what is secondary waves? (S-waves) a transverse seismic wave that travels through the earth
what is seismic waves? the shaking, wave-like movement of the ground In the earthquake
what is a seismometer? an instrument that detects the seismic waves from an earthquake
what is a surface wave? a seismic wave that travels along the surface of the earth in the crust
what is a tsunami? a huge wave in the ocean caused by an earthquake occurring on the seafloor
what is an volcano? a place where extremely hot material form inside the earth erupts at the surface
what are the types of volcano eruptions? gas, ash, lave and solid volcanic rock
what colour dose the lava change? white, yellow, orange, red and finally black
where do volcanos form? near the edges of the tectonic plates
what causes an earthquake? rapid release of an energy as the tectonic plates move
what is used to detect earthquakes? a seismometer
what are the 3 types of waves? primary waves(P-WAVES) secondary waves(S-WAVES) surface waves
where do earthquakes occur? at the start of the tectonic plates and stronger ones near collision (converging boundaries)
