Question Answer
Economic growth Define The growth of national income, usually measured by Gross National Product
Sustainability Define Something can continue at the same level indefinitely
(GDP) Identify and Define Gross Domestic Product. Measures the total value of goods and services produced in an economy in a year
(GNP) Identify and Define Gross National Product. Statistical measure of the size of an economy, using the total value of production and services
Identify 5 reasons why sociologists use GNP with caution Economic growth does not cover all aspects of social development. GNP per capita is an average for the whole population and so conceals inequalities. GNP only counts what happens in the 'official' economy. Continuous economic growth cannot mean sustainable development. Difficult to calculate GNP and GDP accurately.
Sustainable Development Define Development which sustains the natural environment, thereby ensuring future generations can have the same level of development
'Future generations' Define The concept of sustainable development requires consideration of the the future of today's children
Identify 4 commonly used measures of social development Education Health Democracy Gender Equality
(HDI) Identify and define Human Development Index Composite measure of social and economic indicators, giving a statistical value to the level of development
Identify the 3 most important aspects of development which are used to calculate HDI and how they are calculated Material Standard of Living (Gross National Income per capita) Education (mean years of schooling of 25 year olds, and expected years of schooling of children of school entering age) Health (Life expectancy)
(MPI) Identify and Define Multidimensional Poverty Index Replaces the Human Poverty Index. Sees poverty as multidimensional, looking at measures of health, education and living standards
(GII) Identify and Define Gender Inequality Index Measures disadvantages faced by girls and women
(MDG) Millennium Development Goals A set of 8 targets created by the United Nations to achieve progress in development
Third World Identify and Define Undeveloped countries in the world that are economically poor
