Where were towns in Medieval Europe located and why? Around castles, monasteries, and trade routes because of ability to trade goods
what helped towns grow in medieval Europe? agriculture; clearing of forests gave more room for town and better farming methods produced more crops
how could towns become independent from the lord? by purchasing a royal charter; then the town could govern itself, make laws, and raise taxes

why were guilds created? in order to oversee the production of goods and trade and to provide protection for people in the guild
how did guild help families paid for people when they were sick and unable to work, as well as, providing apprenticeships
how did trade change from low middle ages to high middle ages? as the towns grew due to improvements in agriculture, trade grew. At first it was trade of luxury items but then it became trade of useful items
how did merchants become wealthy and powerful? merchants began trading far from home and then began to dominate the trade business; so, they sat on council seats and were elected jobs like mayor=a lot of power
why were Jews mistreated they were not allowed to own property and they were targets of violence; but they could be bankers (something Christians looked at as evil)
What was difficult about growing up in a medieval town? a lot of children died before they became adults
How were girls different from the boys? boys were adopted as apprentices and attended schools; girls married around the age of 15-they learned to care for a family

3 things that led to spread of disease in medieval Europe. no bathrooms, no running water, towns were dirty, rats and fleas

How did Charlemagne's relationship with the Catholic church benefit both parties? Charlemagne promoted religion and the pope got an army from Charlemagne
why was there need for order after Charlemagne's death? small armies and rulers could not sustain without Charlemagne; small kings and rulers left behind developed feudalism
why was Wilhelm the conqueror an important monarch he brought a stable feudalism system to Europe
what responsibilities did lords have in feudal systems? defending their lands and the people that worked their lands
what was role of noblewoman in feudal system they were responsible for fiefs and inherited lands, all the duties the lords had except for fighting
what were challenges of peasant or serf? lots of work: making things and working the land
Which Roman emperor issued a decree allowing Christians to practice their religion freely? Christians were persecuted and executed until Roman Emperor Constanine issuded a decree
what are the two roles of the Roman Catholic Church after the fall of Rome? leadership and distribution of food
what was conflict between Pope Gregory VII and Henry the IV? Henry was mad because as king he was supposed to name church officials and Pope Gregory said he couldn't do it; Henry therefore, tried to take away Gregory's Popedom and Gregory excuminicated Henry from the church. Henry begged forgiveness and the Pope readmitted Henry into the church and had to recognize the pope's authority over him.
Why did people undertake pilgrimages in the middle ages? pilgrimage showed devotion to god, find god's forgiveness and cure an illness;
what were the challenges of pilgrims on their journies? travel by foot, robbers
what was the purpose of the crusades? take control of the holy city of Jerusalem
