What is the Internet? The global communication network that allows almost all computers worldwide to connect and exchange information.
What does WWW mean? The World Wide Web is an information system on the Internet which allows documents to be connected to other documents by hypertext links, enabling the user to search for information
Internet Explorer is the default Web browser for Microsoft Windows operating systems. Can you think of any other Web browsers?
What is Prevent? Prevent is a Government strategy to identify and give support to people at risk of radicalisation and potentially committing acts of terrorism.
What is a search engine? can you name some different search engines? A Search engine enables users to search for documents on the World Wide Web. A search engine is often used to specifically describe systems like Google, Bing and Yahoo!
What does "https" signify? This means that the webpage you are viewing is secure. this would usually apply to shopping sites where your payment information is encrypted.
What is a "Tab"? what benefit is there in using multiple Tabs? A Tab is a window to display a webpage, using additional tabs allows you to compare information. an example maybe looking to book flights for a holiday.
Tabs are temporary, when you close the Internet browser they disappear. How can you make Tabs permanent? You can add them as a new Homepage. you can have a maximum of eight Homepages but if your connection to the internet is slow it will take longer to load them.
What does the term "Safeguarding" mean to you? Safeguarding means protecting people's health, well-being and human rights, enabling them to live free from harm, abuse and neglect.
You have seen or heard a potential safeguarding issue, what should you do next? Make a Safeguarding officer or your tutor aware of your concern. You can also report your concern to reception and they will contact the relevant staff.
You are using Google search engine to find out some information, after entering your text in the search bar what do you need to select to open the webpage you want to look at? The Hyperlink to the webpage.
What is a HOmepage? The Homepage is the page that displays when you open your web browser. You can change the homepage to one of your own choice.
You are using Google search engine to find pictures of Castles, what should you select to only view pictures and not text?
How can using Print by selection help the College meet it's sustainability targets? Some webpages contain much more information than you need to print, using print by selection will save paper and ink because you will only print the information that you want.
Define Boolean logic? Boolean Operators are simple words (AND, OR, NOT or AND NOT) used as conjunctions to combine or exclude keywords in a search, this will refine the search to be more relevant.
You have an interest in a very public person such as an actor or musician. the information is vast so how can you only read new information that has appeared in the last week? Refine the search and set timeline to the last week.
You have heard the phrase "Promoting British values", what does this mean to you? To encourage people to respect the fundamental values of democracy, rule of law, individual libertyand mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
Why is a security suite and antivirus software essential when surfing the net? To protect your Computer from cyber attacks and phishing software.
Your tutor needs evidence of your work but the printer is out of service. Can you suggest an alternative method of capturing the evidence required. Is it sustainable? The evidence could be saved to USB, or emailed as an attachment. Another method would be to take a picture of the work on a smart phone, iPad or tablet. Yes it is sustainable if stored digitally.
What are Cookies and what do they do? Cookies are quick links back to previously visited webpages, they are harmless and most websites use them. you can remove them in your internet browser settings.
What software is installed on the college network to protect staff and learners from opening unsavory websites SOPHOS filtering
What are popups and what can you do to minimise them appearing? Popups are small advertising blocks that appear over webpages. they can be annoying and can be blocked in settings on your web browser.
