Flashcards
LASSERS
Cards in this deck (4)
- 1What are the medical uses of Lasers?- Laser eye surgery to remove cataract's to correct the shape of the lens.
- Lasers can cut through tissue with little friction. Therefore there is little bleeding and less damage to surrounding tissue. Scarring is usually less severe.
- Kidney and gall stones treatment. (Small laser is threaded up the urethra and breaks-up the stones. This makes the stones easier to pass.)
- Liver surgery: where there is a lot of bleeding, the heat from the laser, cauterises the blood vessels as it cuts though the tissue. - 2What are the precautions with lasers?- The beam is very intense (high energy) therefore it is dangerous to look directly at the beam as it will damage eye sight.
- Safety goggles designed to protect the eyes against laser light's should be worn.
- Ensure there are no reflective surfaces so the laser light does not reflect off the surface and hit a part of the patient where it is not needed. - 3What does LASER stand for?Light Amplification by Stimulation of Emission of Radiation
