HITLER'S MAIN ACTION - Drafted thousands of unemployed workers into the army. - He did this secretly at first whilst claiming that he didn't want to rearm, but might do if other countries didn't disarm. - He left the LofN. - In 1935 he staged a rally to show off his new army, he then reintroduced conscription. - Britain was more concerned about Russia than Germany, so they allowed this to happen in the hope that Germany would be a buffer zone. - By 1939 Hitler had an army of near 1 million men, 8,250 aircraft and 95 warships.
HE REGAINED THE SAAR - Not strictly Hitler's action, but was a boost for him. - In 1919, after 15 years of League control, the Saar had a plebiscite to decide its future. - 90% voted to join Germany. - He regained this rich land totally legally.
THE RHINELAND WAS REMILITARISED - In March 1936 Hitler moved soldiers back into the Rhineland. - Hitler was taking a risk he knew that if B&F challenged him he would have to withdraw because he wasn't strong enough yet. - He justified this move because F&Russia signed a deal to protect each other from Germany. - Claimed that Germany was under threat. - Britain thought it was right that he should be protecting his country, France was distracted by the elections and the Abyssinian crisis. - He got away with it.
HE GOT INVOLVED IN THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR - 1936 war broke out in Spain between then Communist govt. ed the and and right-wing rebels. - Hitler helped the rebels with devastating bomb attacks - famously Guernica. - It was a great opportunity to for him to try out his new army. - Showed potential allies how committed he was in the war against Communism.
THE ANTI-COMINTERM PACT WAS SIGNED - Germany formed an alliance with Italy and Japan to limit Communist influence around the world.
ANSCHLUSS WITH AUSTRIA - Hitler believed that Austria, whose people were mainly German, should be one country with Germany. - Many Austrians wanted this, especially as their country was poorer. - He had tried it before but Mussolini. - Now Hitler and Mussolini were allies. - Hitler got the Austrian Nazi part to stir up trouble, rioting and campaigning for Anschluss. - The Austrian president asked B&F to help stop it, but they wouldn't. - He called a plebiscite, but Hitler sent soldiers to "make sure the vote was fair". - 99.75 voted for Anschluss and it happened soon after. - Chamberlain said it was the right thing to do.
THE SUDETENLAND/CZECHOSLOVAKIA - Hitler claimed the Sudetenland. - Rich industrial part of Czechoslovakia, some Germans there. - Czech Nazis stirred up trouble, this time he couldn't just send in his soldiers as B&F&R had promised to protect Czechoslovakia. - Plus the Czechs had modern army. - British people expected war through the summer '38 and prepared. - In Sep Chamberlain and Hitler met, at first Hitler said he only wanted part of the Sudetenland after a plebiscite. - When B&F agreed to it he said that he actually wanted all of it. - He claimed the the Czechs were mistreating Germans in the area. - In a meeting in Munich an agreement was signed and Hitler was given all of it. - 6 months later Hitler's army took over the whole country.
NAZI-SOVIET PACT - Ever since 1933 Hitler stated his interest in conquering Russian land, he persecuted Communists in Germany. - Stalin was worried. - He couldn't sign an agreement with B&F as they saw him as a bigger threat than Hitler. - He was also reluctant to sign a deal with B&F as they looked like weak leaders. - The Munich agreement confirmed this. - Stalin & Hitler signed a pact in Aug 1939 agreeing not to attack each other. - Secretly they agreed to divide Poland between them. - Both men knew they would attack each other in time, but they were buying time until they were ready. - A weak later they invaded Poland and B&F declared war. - Hitler did not expect this.
