Flashcards
What is free will?
Cards in this deck (10)
- 1What is free will?the ability of people to make choices freely and to decide from a number of choices
- 2But what are the implications of humanity' free will in relation to other?as animals appear to have free will too, free will must be something more for humans
- 3What is free will for humanity?it is bound up with the ability to make ethical choices and so implies that we have a moral responsibility
- 4What example supports this?if s/o is considering whether to walk their dog, they might argue that it is raining and would prefer not to bother, but they know that the dog needs exercise and does the walk anyway - this appears to be freely decided.
- 5What did Thomas Hobbes say about freedom?freedom meant that there were no external constraints stopping you from making a free choice
- 6What does David Hume say about freedom?suggests a similar thing to Hobbes, calling free will "the power of acting or of not acting according tot he determination of the will: that is, if we chose to remain at rest, we may and if we choose to move, we also may"
- 7What does this approach to free will fail to distinguish?freedom of will (dog owner wanting to walk dog) and
freedom of action (the dog owner was prevent from walking thanks to sprained ankle - 8is free will required for moral responsibility?if someone is forced to do an action they are not morally responsible as the person did not do the action from their own free will
- 9What is the problem for philosophers with free will?is it compatible with determinism ?
- 10What is determinism ?freedom of choice is merely an illusion making moral responsibility a meaningless concept along with blame and punishment. Every choice we make has been predetermined by the situation before it
