Flashcards
Scientific Determinism
Cards in this deck (11)
- 1What is science based upon?because it is mechanistic it is based upon the theory of universal causation
- 2What does science tell us about events?for every physical event there is a physical cause and this causal chain can be traced back to the moment of the big bang
- 3How does science consider the mind to be? What are the implications of this?material activity in the brain (chemical impulses) then our thoughts and decisions are also predetermined
- 4Who presented the theory of scientific determinism?Laplace, a french mathematician and astronomer (1749-1827)
- 5What did he believe?if it were possible at any one time to know both he position and the speed of all the particles in the universe, it would be possible to know their position at any other time in the past, present or future
- 6What are the implications of this idea?the state of the universe at any one time determines the state of the universe at all other time, it has been central to scientific ideas ever since Isaac Newton
- 7What are the challenges to scientific determinism?- Heisenburg uncertainty principle
- chaos theory plus hindenburg principle
- gaia theory - 8Wsays that it is not possible to measure other the position and speed of a particle at the same time, due tot he effect photons, which itself has a significant effect on a subatomic level. Suggesting that there is no indeterminism nature. however just because we cannot measure both does not mean that both cannot be known
- 9What is the Chaos theory plus hindenburg principle?since the work of Heisenburg it has been accepted that at the quantum level of the material world, event occur randomly and by chance. Chaos theory proposes that a quantum event at this fundamental level can ultimately be the cause of a large scale event. Known as the butterfly effect
- 10What is Gaia Theory?associated with Lovelock posits that the world changes, adapts and amends itself in order to survive and the human race is of little significance. Humans do not control nature, nature is in control
- 11How does Einstein support scientific determinism?discovered the theory of relativity and was unhappy about the apparent randomness in nature "God does not play dice". Believed the uncertainty in nature is only provisional and that there is an underlying reality in which particles have well-defined positions and speeds according to deterministic laws, which may be known by God
