Libertarianism

Zoe Bone Free Will and Determinism English 10 cards

Cards in this deck (10)

  1. 1What is this theory?an incompatibilist theory where human behaviour is not determined by external factors but do agree that word is mechanistic where there is determining causal chain of reactions
  2. 2What is the Kleptomaniac example?physiological conditions may dispose the kleptomaniac to steal but when left alone in a shop no one can be certain that he/she will because he/she has the capacity to choose to do otherwise, having free will
  3. 3What does not determine our choices?past event, cultural or environmental conditioning or biological influences
  4. 4What do they believe about personality?- it is different from the moral self?
    - determined by upbringing, genes, experiences
    - moral self is rational and sets us about from animal world (aquinas) or being slave to feelings (Kant)
    - our freedom is experience in act of will
  5. 5What is the most common argument in favour of libertarianism?we prefer to see ourselves as free individuals rather than puppets on strings
  6. 6What analogy does Peter van Inwagen give?libertarianism is like travelling down a road a choosing which turns to take, whereas determinism is like travelling down a road with no off roads - just a fixed path
  7. 7How does guilt play into libertarianism?as we blame ourselves for our actions we must therefore be able to choose freely, if we were determined we wouldn't feel guilty about choosing certain things
  8. 8How does the Heinsenburg principle support libertarianism?showing events are random and not necessarily caused. Uncertainty principle refers to the nature of how we cannot know both he location and the momentum of sub-atomic particles, it is better to see events as statistical probabilities as opposed to general laws
  9. 9How does Honderich criticise Heisenburg?saying that such randomness only words on a sub-atomic level and does not apply to human nature
  10. 10What can be said against libertarianism?- Locke's analogy of the locked door
    - if we have the power to choose? how do we choose? what criteria should be followed when making a decision?
    - very few would argue that experience, upbringing etc have no influence over our actions
