Flashcards
Existentialism & Post-Modernism
Cards in this deck (11)
- 1What is existentialism?it is the opposite of behaviourism and a by-theory of libertarianism
- 2What did Jean-Paul Sartre believe about human nature?people actively determine their nature through their choices and actions
- 3What did he say was an illusion?to assume there is NOT free will (contrary to Locke)
- 4What did people use determinism for in Sartre's eyes?to avoid responsibility, we have moral responsibility for our actions and cannot blame anyone else
- 5So what is freedom?the goal and measure of our lives and people are able to be whatever they want so long as they choose freely
- 6What does everything in life depend on according to existentialists?the individual and the meaning that they give to their lives (life being ultimately meaningless Sartre argues)
- 7What happens if people avoid freedom?they try and do this but end up conforming to what is decided by others
- 8What quotes can be said to support existentialism?- "man is responsible for the world and himself"
- "to be free is to be condemned to be free" - 9What is Post-modernism?incredulity towards meta-narratives (Jean-François Lyotard)
- 10In other words it is...- a skeptical attitude towards all claims of absolute truth
- he rejection of any one narrative, suggesting everything is still open to interpretation - 11Why is this relevant ?maybe we are determined in a 'hard' way but for the sake of pragmatism you might just say the philosopher needs to take a soft determinist view because we can't live in a world where people aren't responsible for their actions, we can explain everything about humanity and thus need to find a way to live in a society but a hard determinist society is not pragmatic and we need to do what works
