What does the nervous system do? Allows humans to react to their surroundings and coordinates behaviour
What does Receptors do? Detect external stimuli
What does the electrical impulses pass along to get to the brain? Neurons
What does the brain do? Coordinate responses
What are neurons? Nerve cells which are found in nerves. They carry electrical impulses
What are reflex actions? Rapid automatic responses to a stimulus
What does reflexes protect us from? Damage
What is the menstrual cycle controlled by? Hormones
What is FSH made by? Pituitary gland
What does FSH cause? The egg to mature and oestrogen to be produced
What is Oestrogen produced by, what is its job and what does it stimulate? Produced by the ovaries and stops further production of FSH. It stimulates the production of LH and stimulates the womb lining to develop to receive the fertilised egg
What does contraceptive pills contain? Oestrogen and progesterone
What can be given to a woman to help her produce eggs? FSH
What does the nervous system and hormones help do? Keep the internal conditions of the body within certain limits
Name 4 things carefully controlled in the body? Water → Ion content → temperature → blood sugar level
Why must we keep our temperature constant? Otherwise enzymes in the body will not work properly (or not work atall)
Name 3 things plants respond to? Light → Gravity → moisture
What grows towards light and away from gravity? Shoots
What grows towards gravity and water? Roots
What is the hormone that causes the changes in growth? Auxin
Name 2 things plant hormones have use in? Agriculture → horticulture
Name 2 things auxin controls? phototropism → gravitropism
What can the incorrect usage of plant hormones do? Damage the environment
