Macbeth Flashcards
Cards in this deck (3)
- 1Guilt is important because it demonstrates Macbeth’s weakness as a king. -“Stars, hide your fires!/Let not light see my black and deep desires.”, Macbeth wants to hide his guilt from God. -“Take any shape but that”, Macbeth would rather face a wild beast than his own guilt.-“I could not say 'Amen’”, Macbeth went against God and was damned for it.
-“Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood / Clean from my hand?”, Blood represents guilt.
-“Is this a dagger which I see before me”, Macbeth is hallucinating and insanity is a mental weakness. - 2Context: A king is chosen by God and cannot be wrong, Macbeth was a usurper so felt guilty.Ambition is represented by Lady Macbeth and is important because she becomes the driving force behind Macbeth’s desire to be king.
“too full o' the milk of human kindness”, Lady Macbeth constantly berates her husband in order to encourage him.
“I have no spur/To prick the sides of my intent”, Without his wife, Macbeth would never have gone through with it.
“For mine own good”, Macbeth, like his wife, is driven purely by selfish desire.
“Out, out, brief candle!/ Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player/ That struts and frets his hour upon the stage/ And then is heard no more. It is a tale/ Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,/ Signifying nothing”, Macbeth realises that his wife’s ambition has begotten nothing but death.
Context: Lady Macbeth’s power over her husband would have been shocking to a 17th century audience while a modern audience are more used to powerful female characters. - 3—
