When and what did Hitler first do when he came to power? What did he have to be careful of? 1935-He started to build up the German army and airforce. In secret because REARMAMENT was forbidden by the TREATY OF VERSAILLES.
Why did British and France not to anything to stop the German rearmament? They were more worried about the power of the Communist USSR and they thought that a strong Germany might be able to protect the rest of Europe.
When did Hitler order German soldiers to march into Rhineland? In 1936
How did Hitler justify his invasion of Rhineland? German territory should be protected by German troops. Many thought this was reasonable, no one was prepared to stop Hitler.
How did Hitler join forces with Austria? When was this? - IN 1938 - He sent troops into Austria and forced the Austrian leader to hold a vote - He made sure that the vote was rigged – over 99% of Austrians voted for unification
Why did British, France and Italy not offer any help to the Austrian leader when he asked? They didn't want to risk war Hitler promised he only wanted peace
What did Hitler demand in September 1938? He demanded that a region of Czechoslovakia, Sudetenland join Germany.
How did Hitler justify his demand for Sudentenland? He said most people living there were German wanted to unite with Germany.
What was the 'Munich agreement'? Were the Czechs told of this? The Munich agreement was when Neville Chamberlain, the British Prime Minister and the French agreed that Hitler could have Sudetenland as long as he didn't try to take over the rest of Czechoslovakia. No.
What were the British people told about what the Munich agreement did? They were told that this agreement had prevented war after Chamberlain went to see Hitler three times to avoid war.
What happened in Czechoslovakia in March, 1939? German troops invaded the rest of Czechoslovakia.
What were the consequences of the invasion of Czechoslovakia? British and France did nothing to help them but promised to help Poland if it was invaded as it was expected that would be invaded next.
What pact did Hitler and Stalin sign despite hating each other? What were the advantages of this pact? In August 1939, a non-aggression pact was signed by Hitler and Stalin that agreed they would not fight against each other and they will divide up Poland. Hitler did not have to fight a war on two fronts.
