Physics- Electric and Magnetic Fields

Krish Khatiwada Physics Year 12 English 9 cards

Cards in this deck (9)

  1. 1Define Electric FieldAn electric field is any region in space where a charged particle experiences a force.
  2. 2Define Electric Field Strength (units)Force per unit positive test charge placed at that point in the field.
Units: Newtons per Coulomb or NC^-1
  3. 3Direction of the Electric Field: 1) when the charge is positive 2) When the charge is negativeIf the charge is positive, Electric field is in the same direction as the Force
    (ie: parallel)
If the charge is negative, Electric Field is in the opposite direction to the Force
    (ie: anti-parallel
  4. 4Coulomb's LawThere exists a force between any two charges. The magnitude of the force is directly proportional to the product of the charges (ie F∝ q X q)
and inversely proportional to the square of the distance. (ie F ∝ 1/r^2)
  5. 5Force is directly proportional: F ∝ q X q what would happen to the force if you double one of the charges? If you double one of the charges, the force between the charges will double and Halving a charge will halve the force.
  6. 6Force is inversely proportional: F ∝ 1/r^2) What would happen to the force, if you double the distance between the charges? If you double the distance between the charges, the force between will be a quarter of the original force.
  7. 7Why isn't Electric Field present inside a hollow conductor? There is no Electric Field inside a hollow conductor because all charges reside on the outside of the conductor as the surface area is greater and therefore, charges can be further from each other.
  8. 8Why do field lines always leave the surface at 90˚?If Electric field is not at right angles there would be a component of the Electric Field which is parallel to the surface. Therefore, the particles would experience a force equal to qE(vector) and hence undergo an acceleration equal to (vector F/m). However, the particles undergo an equilibrium and remain static ∴there cannot be a horizontal component of the Electric Field ∴ field lines are perpendicular to the surface
