Segregation in the United States
Some wanted to keep blacks and whites separated.
Some wanted blacks and whites to be together.
Ruby Bridges went to an all white school.
Maniac Magee moved in with a black family even though he was white.
Maniac and Ruby tried to show people that they were not different just because of their skin color.
The McNabs thought that black people were going to attack them and steal their things.
Parents pulled their kids out of the school that Ruby attended until she was the only student left.
People did not understand that they were not different just because of their skin color. Eventually Ruby and Maniac were mostly accepted.
