- when current flows in the horizontal coil, magnetic field is produced around it
- the interactions between the magnetic field of the coil and permanent magnets produce resultant magnetic field or catapult field which exerts a catapult force, thus 2 turning force is created.
- the direction of the turning force acting is determined by Fleming's left-hand rule
- The two forces rotates the coil anti-clockwise
- When the coil is in an upright position, the contact between the carbon brush and commutator is broken
- Hence, there is turning force produced to rotate the coil because there's no current flows in the coil.
- But the coil continues to rotate due to its inertia
- When the coil is in its horizontal position again, the sides of the coil changes position.
- the commutator reverse the direction of the current in the coil to ensure that the forces acting on the coil turns the coil in one direction only.
- so, the coil is still rotating in the same direction .
- the process above is repeated and the motor continues to rotate.
