1. Structural and Functional views of language

   • Structural view it concentrates on the grammatical system, describing ways in which linguistics items can be combined

   • Function view it refers to a speaker's purpose in uttering a specific sentence, phrase, or clause. And it depends on specific situation and social factors
     • Example: 1) Suggestion you should close the window, please' 2)Complain you've left the window open !

2. Understanding functional meanings

   • There are three corresponding aspects of the skill involved in understanding meaning
     • The ability to understand linguistic structures and vocabulary
     • The ability to relate the linguistic forms to appropriate non-linguistic knowledge , in order to interpret the specific functional meaning intended by speaker
     • Knowledge of the potential communicative of linguistic forms.

3. Understanding and expressing social meaning

   • The social situation determining the nature of the language, it can help determine the social atmosphere of the situation.
   • Speakers can use informal and formal speech according to the real context on his or her is.
     • Informal speech accelerates the development of a personal relationship.

4. Expressing and functional meanings

   • The most efficient communicator a foreign language is who is most skilled at processing the complete situation involving himself and his hearer
