superlatives

  1. Superlatives are used to indicate an extreme in a group of things.

    • for example
      • Bob is the tallest student in the class.
  2. -est

    • Generally the superlative is formed by adding the suffix -est to the adjective.
  3. -st

    • If the adjective ends with e, -st is added to form the superlative.

    • If a word ends with a consonant and then and, the y is changed to -iest.

    • If a word ends with a consonant, a vowel, and then another consonant and the strong syllable is the last, the last letter is doubled before adding -est.
  6. "Most"

    • If the word is two syllables or more (a long word) and does not end with y, we use the word most, instead of -est.
