AS vs LIKE

  1. Both can be used to make comparisons or talk about similarities. It is very common in American English to use "like" instead of "as". However, it is generally considered informal to use it in this way.

    • AS
      • "As" means "en la misma manera" or "en la misma condición de". Unlike "like", "as" is followed by a subject and a verb.
        • USE
          • "As" is used in comparative sentences of inferiority and equality.
        • EXAMPLES
          • 1.- John can run as fast as Peter.
            • 2.- My dad doesn’t have as much energy as he used to have.
        • FACT
          • When it is a preposition, "as" means the role or profession of something or someone.
    • LIKE
      • "Like" is a preposition that means "similar to" or "the same as". "As *" cannot be used in this way. Like a preposition, “like” is followed by a noun or a pronoun.
        • USE
          • Also, "like" is used to say that something is typical of someone.
        • EXAMPLES
          • 1.- She dances like a professional.
            • 2.- Like me, my friend John loves the cinema.
        • FACT
          • We also use "like" to present examples.
