Research Already-just-yet

  1. These are three very common expressions in English, learning them will help you express yourself much better. All three are used in a tense known as the present perfect (I have gone) which, as we saw in the previous lesson, is formulated using the verb HAVE + verb in the past participle.

    • The term just is used when we want to say that something has happened a short time ago, usually a matter of minutes ago.
      • Just = a short time ago, a short time ago
      • Martin: Are Diane and Paul here? Betty: Yes, they've just arrived.
  2. Already is used when we want to say that something has already happened, especially when we did not know or did not expect that it had already happened. That is, it is used when something happens earlier than expected .

    • Already = Before expected
      • He's already arrived.
        • It's only 9 pm and Betty has already gone to bed.
  3. Yet we use it in negations to say that something has not happened yet. We also use it in questions to find out if something has already happened or not yet.

    • Yet = Until now
    • Martin: Are Diane and Paul here? Betty: No, they haven't arrived yet.
