THE EXPANSION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

In 1800, the United States did not look the way it does now. It was smaller.
1. The first big step in Westward Expansion was the Louisiana Purchase.
  1. The President, Thomas Jefferson, bought 828,000 square miles of land from France. This land, called the Louisiana Territory, was just west of the United States.
    1. In 1848, America bought the Oregon territory from England.
      1. In 1890, the US government announced that the west had been explored.
        • The population of the United States grew from 5.2 million people in 1800 to 76.2 million in 1900.
