    1. Secret terrorist organizationg the Black Hand - Gravillo Princip was part of this group and he killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife in 1914.
      1. Countries competed for the biggest navies.

        1. Competition between Britain and Germany for the seas. In 1906 the British had introduced the Dreadnought battleship.
          1. Germany and France competed for better and bigger armies.

            1. A demand and competition for more land and produce was developing
              1. The amount of lands owned by Britain and France increased the rivalry with Germany who only owned small areas of Africa.
                1. Bosnian Crisis
                  1. In 1908 Austria-Hungary took over the former Turkish province of Bosnia, Serbia was angry, they wanted it. Russia was allied with Serbia so they prepared.
                    1. Germany was Allied to Austria- Hungary and got their forces ready. Russia backed down Avoiding war. Tensions were high.
                      1. There was a war in Balkans between 1911 and 1912 when the Balkan states drove Turkey out of the area. They fought to decide white area belongs to which state.
                2. Things that caused it
                  1. June 28th, 1914: Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his wife Sophie are assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia
                    1. July 20th 1914: Austria-Hungary starts sending their troops to the Serbian frontier.
                      1. July 25th 1914: Russia prepares for troops to be put on Russo-Austrian frontier
                        1. July 28th 1914: Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia.
                          1. July 26th 1914: A meeting is organized to take place with ambassadors from Britain, Germany, Italy and France to discuss what's going on. Russia had agreed to stand aside while others discussed. Germany declined the offer.
                            1. July 29th, 1914: The British embassador of Berlin, Sir Edward Goschen gets news that Germany wanted to send his army through Belgium. He tried to secure Britain in such an action,
                              1. August 1st, 1914 - Germany declares war on Russia
                                1. Nicholas ii (1869-1918)- In the Mid 1915's he made a horrible mistake by taking direct command of the Russian armies. Basically from there on in every failure the military faced it was his fault.
                                  1. December 3rd, 1917 - Russia signs an armistice with Germany
                                  2. August 3rd 1914: Germany declared war on France and invaded Belgium. Germany had to take action and use the Schlieffen plan.
                                    1. August 11th, 1914: 'Your King and Country Need You' slogan is published, calling for the first 100,000 men to enlist for Kitchener's New Army. The call is answered within two weeks.
                                      1. On August 14th 1914: Woodrow Wilson, 28th president of the USA, announced that America would be neutral in World War One.
                                        1. April 6th 1917 - USA declared war on Germany
                                          1. November 11th 1918: Germany signed an Armistice with the allies- this is the date of the end of WOrld War One.

                              2. 1894: Franco - Russian Alliance: Russia formed an alliance with France to protect themselves from Austria- Hungary and Germany
                                1. 1904: Entente Cordiale: This was not an official alliance between France and Britain, just an agreement.
