Clamp Inspection and Installation

  1. Installation

    • Don't permit wire or harness to have frictional contact with another object
    • Do not permit wire or harness to contact sharp edges
    • Do not subject harness to sharp bends
    • Do not permit chafing
    • Prevent mechanical strain
    • Prevent excessive movement in high vibration areas
    • Permit re-assembly to equipment and terminal boards
    • Permit replacement or repair of individual wires without removing entire harness
    • Clamp must not be installed on a wire harness where wires cross each other
    • Clamp must not be installed on a repair
    • Clamp must not be installed on lacing tape or platic tie wrap
    • Clamp must not be installed on a shield ground wire assembly
    • Clamp must not be installed on the bend of a coax cable if the bend is less that 6 inches
  2. Appropriate Support Clamp Installation

    • Size of clamp must match wire harness size
    • Max diameter of wire harness supported with nylon clamp is 1.25 inches
    • Properties of clamp must match the environment its in
    • No pinching of any cables
    • Clamp cushion must enclose whole harness
    • Clamp must be installed 90 degrees to the harness routing
    • Mounting screw must be above wire harness
  3. Correct Size

    • Visually fits
    • Put clamp around harness and attach to attachment point. You should be able to feel if it fits or not
    • All wires are contained in the cushion and no wires are pinched
    • Torque the screw until clamp tabs are almost in contact
    • Pull with moderate force on wire harness, clamp must not let the harness move laterally or longitudinally
  4. Sufficient Slack

    • Connectors can be connected and disconnected easily
    • Strain is not put on the wire, cable or harness
    • Strain is not put on the termination of a wire or cable
    • Strain does not pull a connector grommet out of its shape
    • Hinge joints can move freely
    • Equipment can be removed easily
    • Expansion of the airframe does not put strain on the wire, cable or wire harness
