Techniques for testing
Test harnesses
- Streamline software development
- Assist with further maintenance
- Avoid the need for time-consuming manual testing
Performance testing
- Determines how fast some aspects of the system
- Can compare two systems to see which performs better
- Can see what performs badly
Volume and scalability testing
- Testing using the anticipated volume of peak data or network traffic
- Makes sure that systems have adequate storage capacity
- Also must make sure system has enough processing for vast amounts of data
Usability testing
- Measures how well people can use the system
- May cause developers to redesign and retest the system
Portability testing
- Systems will be used on a range of different hardware
- Also used on different operating systems
Prototyping
- Prototypes can be used to define a system
- Can have digital prototyping or paper prototyping
Use of simulated environments
- Some systems can only be tested on one manufacturer's hardware
- Emulations and simulated environments can have limitations
