Kitchen Fire Safety

  1. never move a pan that is on fire because the movement may cause the air to pus the fire towards you

  2. never put water on a kitchen fire

  3. kitchen fires, once water is added, can rise all the way up to the ceiling and spread across the room

  4. if you add water to a cooking fire, the water instantly turns to steam and mimics and explosion

  5. to put out, you can cover it with a lid

    • when covering with a lid, slowly place from one edge working your way to the opposite
    • once covered, turn off the heat
  6. if you cover a fire with a lid, never remove lid until completely cooled because fresh air has the potential of reigniting the fire

  7. if you do not have a lid to cover the fire, you could always use a cookie sheet or pizza pan

  8. for extra prevention, you could purchase "stove top fire stop" which hangs above your burners and could prevent cooking fires

  9. cooking fires are the #1 leading cause of house fires

  10. never try to smother a fire with a wet towel

  11. if using a fire extinguisher, make sure it is a dry chemical extinguisher, not water based

  12. when the fire starts, you only have about 30 seconds to get the fire under control

  13. to know your extinguisher is going to work on a grease fire, check to see if extinguisher says "A B C" on the label. This tells you it works for electrical fires, grease fires, and other home fires
